The principle underlying the project “Classes Passerelles” (Bridging classes) is that of offering social support to young asylum seekers aged between 16 and 26, as well as offering them language courses.
What these youngsters have in common is that they have all passed the age of obligatory school attendance and do not speak any of the languages normally used in Luxembourg.
Teaching in these classes, in particular using French as a language to boost professional prospects, gives the youngsters the chance to enter other training courses or the world of work. Furthermore, the courses offer the students the opportunity to learn essential information and codes in operation in their host country: its traditions, customs, usages and culture.
An initial class was opened in January 2016 to last for one year, teaching 30 or so asylum seekers and migrants on the waiting list. Pressing needs led to the opening, for a total of 40 students, in September of two new classes, each of which is due to last two years. It became necessary to reduce the size of the classes in order to offer intensive courses to the faster learners and beginners’ classes to those who had received little scholastic education.
