In this new episode of our podcast Hors d’Œuvre, we speak with Yves Schmitz, historian and author of the book “Luxemburg war nie eine Kolonialmacht”, created in collaboration with Richtung22. Together, we explore a topic that remains largely absent from public debate: Luxembourg’s connections to colonial structures.

Colonialism is often perceived as distant, yet it continues to shape our societies and the ways we understand the world. Yves Schmitz explains, in clear and accessible terms, how Luxembourg became involved in these systems, even without having colonies of its own, and why this history still matters today.

Throughout the episode, we discuss:

  • the mechanisms through which Luxembourg took part in the European colonial system;
  • the actors, sectors and institutions involved at the time;
  • the long-lasting effects of these dynamics on society;
  • why it is important to develop an informed perspective on this past to better understand certain contemporary perceptions.

A clear and insightful conversation that sheds light on an essential, yet often overlooked, part of our collective history.
