Period 2024
Learning to ride a bike as an adult is neither rare nor too late. Through its adult cycling lessons, ProVelo asbl gives dozens of people every year – mostly women of all ages – the opportunity to master a new mode of transport, and to gain autonomy and self-confidence.
Many of our participants never had the chance to learn how to ride. Others are afraid, lack confidence, or fear traffic. Our caring approach helps them move past those blocks.

A gentle, step-by-step, and effective method
Based on the “moveo ergo sum” method developed by Christian Burmeister, a pioneer of adult cycling instruction in Germany, the program follows a gradual progression: scooter, small bike, then full-size bike – over 8 consecutive two-hour sessions. This pace allows participants to take their time to learn balance, coordination, and traffic navigation, without ever feeling overwhelmed. The idea is to rediscover cycling in all its forms – in a playful, safe, and encouraging way.
Tailored teaching, supported by Œuvre Nationale
Thanks to support from Œuvre Nationale, the team was able to renew its teaching materials: 14 scooters and 14 small bikes have already been delivered. However, the delivery of full-size bikes was delayed, as suppliers failed to fulfill the order. The team is currently seeking alternatives, with very specific criteria (low frame, rim brakes, internal gears) that are crucial for beginners’ safety and comfort. “For the spring sessions, we’ll continue using our older bikes. We adapt – but we stay the course.” explains Danièle Mousel.

Unforgettable first rides
Each course brings its share of powerful emotions. That moment when a participant rides solo for the first time – balanced and smiling – is forever etched in memory.
They’re often magical moments. Smiles, laughter, tears of joy… People ask us to take photos and videos to share with loved ones. It’s a real personal victory.

At the end of each course cycle, a supervised ride allows students to put their skills into practice in a real-world setting – with the support of instructors. And the learning doesn’t stop there: many groups continue meeting up to ride together even after the course ends.
Impact far beyond cycling
These courses go beyond teaching a skill. They help participants regain confidence, expand their autonomy, and above all, reclaim a sustainable, economical form of mobility. “Learning to ride also opens new perspectives. For many women especially, it means more freedom, more mobility, more choice.” says Danièle Mousel.

Expanding access even further
In response to growing demand, ProVelo plans to expand its offer: more sessions throughout the year (outside winter), and refresher afternoons for former participants to reinforce skills and maintain motivation.
No one should be excluded from the joy of cycling. Anyone can learn! Take the leap. No matter your age, your story, your language – learning to ride is reclaiming your freedom. And you’ll be proud of what you’ve accomplished.
